What is Water Soluble Cutting Oil?

Definition:

Is an oil-in-water type of coolant and lubricant designed specifically for metalworking and machining processes.

The properties that are sought after in a good cutting fluid are the ability to:

  • keep the workpiece at a stable temperature (critical when working to close tolerances). Very warm is OK, but extremely hot or alternating hot-and-cold are avoided.
  • maximize the life of the cutting tip by lubricating the working edge and reducing tip welding.
  • prevent rust on machine parts and cutters.

Industry:  Auto Parts Manufacturing, Machine Shops, Rollforming

Preparation of water soluble cutting oil:

The oil concentrate must be added to the water (remember: oil = Oil in last).

  1. Measure the water into a clean tank.
  2. Measure the required volume of concentrate and gradually pour it into the water. Keep mixing while pouring. Slow-speed mechanical agitation is preferred.
  3. Use a suitable mixing unit or proportioner.
  4. Verify concentration after mixing.
